Locally Fresh: Champagne X Cupcakes…

2015/01/img_5213.png

Last night I decided to not stay home and get into “Empire” (still not) but instead kick it with my bros for a night of fellowship, Hennessy(champagne, wine), and Fun at Champagne and Cupcakes (yes…they really had cupcakes.) I usually don’t go out too much during the week especially when I have work in the morning. However, I was feeling festive and thought why not? I can sacrifice a little shut eye. The event was held at Parliament in Downtown Oakland, and the vibe was very cool. The music was great too (shout out to DJ Red Corvette and drinks were for the low. It happens once a month so keep your eye out for the announcement of the next one. Check out my pics below.

Cooking is Stylish: Easy and Impressive Sea Bass…

 2015/01/img_4910.jpg
I love to cook. If you follow my Instagram you can see that. Cooking is how I decompress, especially when I am trying out a new recipe.  So the spirit, guided me to waltz into Whole Foods because I wanted to make some Sea Bass for dinner. I have a love/hate relationship with Whole Foods (or Ho foods, there’s always a hot guy there, ALWAYS). I think that their meat and fish is so fresh, but I also feel like the grocery bill is equivalent of a pair of shoes (I rather starve).  I copped the Sea Bass and a couple of other things and was outta there.

Personal Style: Sweatpants are Always Appropriate…

IMG_4264.JPG

Shot by Eric Williams

Sweatpants will always be a in my closet, and I will always try to wear them with anything, anywhere. They are just comfortable and because they are popular right now, you can find a plethora of styles in stores and online. These Marshall Nash “Party Queen” sweats are a great addition if you are looking for some sweats that will be universal. There is always more than one way to wear a sweat suit and I am always on a mission to make them work for any occasion.

Happy Birthday!

IMG_3997.JPG

Happy Birthday to me! Who knew I could have two birthdays?! (my legit one is in January) Today a year ago I decided to get back into doing what I love and start blogging. I must say it is one of the best choices I’ve made this year. I love fashion and love people even more. To be able to write about my friends, people I admire, things I love (and not so much) has enabled me to flex creatively and learn about my strengths and bring them out in others. Having this blog has encouraged me to take risks and put myself out there is a way that I was not used to or comfortable with. To me this is not just another fashion blog, to me it’s something that I want you to love and appreciate and become something that you feel is yours as much as it is mine. Discipline is something that is a challenge for me sometimes, so being able to commit and stay consistent just means more for everyone ( and proof to myself that I am not a world class procrastinator.)  Thank you to all my friends, Family, and STRANGERS. Who retweet, like, re post , comment and come up to me in the streets to show love. It really means a lot to me. I will continue to commit to you and create. Thank you. And have some Hennessy for me today!

Gratefully,

Maryam (but my real name is Unicorn Shawty)

Happy Belated Birthday (A) Merica….

20140707-204600-74760014.jpg

Happy belated girl. I was too busy sipping on my favorite cognac and hanging out with my friends to wish you a happy birthday on Friday. So here is my belated. Thank you for being the independent bad bitch land of opportunity. Where we can be whatever we want to be. I hope one day to contribute to your fabulousness in a positive way for years to come. At your old age you still look the tender age of 21. You go girl!

You Can’t Wear Sneakers ALL The Time…

20140626-064922-24562859.jpg

20140626-065011-24611203.jpg

I was trying my new shoes on and decided to have a photo shoot with them! If you follow this blog you know I live in Oakland, CA. Which is the laid back capitol of my world at least. So naturally I have a lot of sneakers. Most of the events and activities I go to they are allowed and my job doesn’t require me to dress up so I opt for sneakers over heels often. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a heel. I enjoy a sexy, interesting, feminine shoe just as I do a crisp pair of Jordans. However you have to have balance in your closet and mine was not. Every time it was time to dress up, it was a struggle and I was limited on what I could wear because I only had a few pairs of heels and NO essentials or classics. So I saw Zara was having a really good sale, so I copped me a pair. I think I spent a total of $150 on four pairs of shoes (one not pictured because I’m still on the fence about them) Anyway check Zara out during sale time, it’s for sure the come up.

Book Report: Why Being a Girlboss is Cool…

20140625-125831-46711035.jpg

Last week I bought the book “#Girlboss” written by the creator, CEO, and general all around bad ass boss lady of Nasty Gal Sophia Amoruso. Now let me preface this by saying that my attention span is very short sometimes, especially when reading books. I really…I mean REALLY, have to be interested in the subject matter to finish reading one and if I am, I breeze through it in a few days. Which is what I did with this book. I felt like she was talking straight to ME. Like a homegirl that wrote a special manual to help me succeed.  The experiences that Amoruso describes on her journey resonated with mine so much. From the terrible jobs, to the changing your style several times in a journey to finds oneself. However not only is she telling her story she is also giving advice that she has actually used herself. From how to write a proper resume, to saving money and self help tips. This book is the necessary tool for anyone who needs a boost and confirmation that they are on the right path.

Loyalty is Vintage and I’m a Slacker…

20140624-063401-23641495.jpg

This is a story about how I was a flaky late bird and missed out on a purchase I wanted to make. Now this doesn’t happen to me too often so when it does I spiral into the biggest crybaby for a few hours. Case in point the shirt above. This creation was curated by one of my absolute favorite people on twitter @BrookAndTheCity. This girl does it all, radio, clothing, writer, lashes (which I’ve gotten and are fab!) and slangs a mean drank! ( tip appropriately) Anyway I set my browser so that I could snag one of her shirts on her site when they were posted but by the time I got there this is what I saw… Continue reading

The “Other Side” of the Camera…

20140623-221737-80257514.jpg

Shot By Eric Williams for http://www.misslaurenhailey.com

I’ve never been one to seek out the spotlight or want to be front and center. Which is why I initially wanted to be a stylist. I enjoyed being behind the scenes and letting my work speak for me. I have always been that way; no matter how I may have looked or felt about myself my work was going to be thing that made me confident and made the trash talkers shut up. However in the age of the internet and social media, and being a blogger part of your brand is YOU. So naturally as you grow people want to interview you. A while back I had Lauren Hailey of MissLaurenHailey.com contact me to do an interview for her blog which included a photo shoot. I was so excited to do it but scared as hell. I have never ever been on that side of the camera before. I immediately thought A. WTF am I going to wear and B. I don’t know shit about “modeling” (I use the term model verrry loosely) Continue reading

Slackin’ On My Mackin……

Man oh man! I am no good. The month of May has decided to be so busy that I cannot find any time to just sit and write. Between preparing for Bonnaroo in June, working my side/main hustle (also known as my day job) and coming up with new project for the site, I have been SWAMPED. I feel sad because I really enjoy blogging and just writing in general but my spirit has to be in the right place. I have also been going though major changes so that may have contributed to my slackness. But these excuses are neither here nor there and when you know better you do better. So I’ll just do better. I am working on a new editorial with a fellow stylist that I am excited about and working on getting some new tools to produce better work (hello Ipad, hello new laptop, hello camera) Which means better posts and cooler stuff for you all to read and see! So this is my apology note for being a slacker. Tis all.
