This time last year…

When I was in elementary school my mom planned a trip for us to go to Hawaii we had never been and I was extremely excited to go. I remember visualizing what it would smell like, what the sun would feel like on my skin, and how clear the water was. I had hyped myself up for weeks preparing for this adventure. Continue reading

IT TWANKLES AND GLISTENS!!

When I graduated college many, moons ago (don’t ask how many moons ok!) As a gift my mom gave me a ” You’re a grown woman self care kit/Lesson”. She has always been on our heads (my sisters and I) about taking care of our skin. To the point that she will comment things like “I hope you have on sunscreen!” on a fire selfie posted to Facebook. Think I’m kidding? Exhibit A:

Don’t Tell Me What to Wear!

Style and Fashion is something that I have always had a connection to. I was having a conversation with a friend on Friday night and the subject of personal style came up and how that resonates with me. I believe for most of my life I have had a strong sense of ownership over my style. As a child I felt like that was the only thing that I actually had control over at the time. Like most kids I had to go to school, do chores, had extra curricular activities that I was forced to do (shout out to Chess Club and Soccer). Everything was planned out for me…naturally.

This is the “What the F*ck do I want to do?” Post

I have come to that point in my life where I look around and ask my self….WTF do I wanna do? What makes me happy? What would make me feel like I have a purpose and fulfilled?
At the moment I don’t have a concrete answer to that question. However I did want to start the dialog. Growth and change is apart of life and I feel like I’m on the cusp of a big one. Like that Christmas morning feeling of excitement because you know there is a bunch of good shit is coming your way. So in an effort to figure out what the “IT” is and get that spark back I am trying to find tools to implement into my life to propel myself forward.
One way I am helping myself get into this groove is  an exercise that I learned while watching a Ted Talk that Shonda Rhimes gave. In it she talks about taking 15 mins for yourself everyday that is uninterrupted. That means no phone, you’re not multitasking etc. Just be with you for 15 mins and then go about your day.As I was listening to her I realized there is not one point in my day where I do that. I am always doing something or many things at one time and not really thinking or checking in with myself. I thought this was a great first step to getting focused and figuring out whats next. Try the 15 min check in for yourself. Let me know what kind of results you get!

Unicorn Shawty: On Cooking…

Well well whale! I am the most slack blogger on the planet. Real life really gets in the way and then I look up and it’s been over a month since I’ve posted. So here we are and I’m not even talking about fashion. As a self proclaimed food designer and a highly visual person. I just like things that looks good, Including my food. Yes, I plate my food like it being served in a restaurant. Yes, I only like serving my food on white plates because it looks better (and better for taking pics). To give you some background my mom used to own a restaurant and so did my uncle and they are both great chefs. My mother always taught me the importance of flavors, using quality ingredients, and that eating is 80% visual so it has to LOOK good. I’m sure my mom thinks that I don’t listen to her sometimes growing up but that lesson sure stuck with me. Continue reading

Happy Birthday!

IMG_3997.JPG

Happy Birthday to me! Who knew I could have two birthdays?! (my legit one is in January) Today a year ago I decided to get back into doing what I love and start blogging. I must say it is one of the best choices I’ve made this year. I love fashion and love people even more. To be able to write about my friends, people I admire, things I love (and not so much) has enabled me to flex creatively and learn about my strengths and bring them out in others. Having this blog has encouraged me to take risks and put myself out there is a way that I was not used to or comfortable with. To me this is not just another fashion blog, to me it’s something that I want you to love and appreciate and become something that you feel is yours as much as it is mine. Discipline is something that is a challenge for me sometimes, so being able to commit and stay consistent just means more for everyone ( and proof to myself that I am not a world class procrastinator.)  Thank you to all my friends, Family, and STRANGERS. Who retweet, like, re post , comment and come up to me in the streets to show love. It really means a lot to me. I will continue to commit to you and create. Thank you. And have some Hennessy for me today!

Gratefully,

Maryam (but my real name is Unicorn Shawty)
