Out The Box: The Rise Of Sneaker Culture

This past week I took an adventure to the Oakland Museum which is conveniently located in my hood to check out the exhibit on Sneaker Culture. I was really excited about seeing this because I have had a long standing love affair with sneakers and streetwear.  If you have been following my blog for a while that’s def obvious. Due to this longstanding love I had abnormally high expectations for my trip. However It was low-key disappointing once I started my walk through the exhibit. I would say at best that this exhibit is for the occasional sneaker head who has a 101 knowledge of sneaker culture. Albeit there were some highlights like the Obama Air force 1 and every single Jordan ever made, but other than that it was like walking through a shoe store.

So Necessary: Adidas Stan Smith

IMG_4333.JPG

My big sister was a huge and still is huge a Adidas fan. I remember her wearing gazelles as a kid and wished that we had the same shoe size so I could wear hers to school. My older sister is the first person who instilled the importance of having a quality sneaker collection in my life. She had Stan Smiths in every color and will wear them with the flyest sweatsuits to school. So I have always had a love for them. However it’s really hard for me to keep white shoes clean so I have ran through several pairs of Stan Smiths. My favorite story about a pair of Smith’s that I had was when I was living in Atlanta and I was hanging out with my sister by Stankonia and Alex studios. Continue reading

Women’s Shoes that Aren’t Pink!: Nike City Collection

I swear I rant and rave about this weekly on twitter. The powers that be over at sneaker companies like Nike, need to realize that not all women want shoes that are Pink or Purple or some other stereotypical color like powder blue. Personally I steer clear of shoes that color unless they are extremely dope and a must have. Someone must have been listening to me.  Continue reading

Happy Birthday!

IMG_3997.JPG

Happy Birthday to me! Who knew I could have two birthdays?! (my legit one is in January) Today a year ago I decided to get back into doing what I love and start blogging. I must say it is one of the best choices I’ve made this year. I love fashion and love people even more. To be able to write about my friends, people I admire, things I love (and not so much) has enabled me to flex creatively and learn about my strengths and bring them out in others. Having this blog has encouraged me to take risks and put myself out there is a way that I was not used to or comfortable with. To me this is not just another fashion blog, to me it’s something that I want you to love and appreciate and become something that you feel is yours as much as it is mine. Discipline is something that is a challenge for me sometimes, so being able to commit and stay consistent just means more for everyone ( and proof to myself that I am not a world class procrastinator.)  Thank you to all my friends, Family, and STRANGERS. Who retweet, like, re post , comment and come up to me in the streets to show love. It really means a lot to me. I will continue to commit to you and create. Thank you. And have some Hennessy for me today!

Gratefully,

Maryam (but my real name is Unicorn Shawty)

Dear Eastbay And Hypebeasts…..Updated

20140415-082853.jpg

Don’t mess this up for me! As most know by now there is going to be a gargantuan restock of Jordan’s Saturday on Eastbay.com. Now I am not one to buy every single Jordan that comes out. I strive to maintain a balance in my closet between heels and sneakers. However there are three pairs of Jays that I missed out on that are going to be on sale Saturday that I MUST get. My soul will not rest until I have them. Like I said There’s ONLY three and most have Nostalgic value because I couldn’t afford (and my mom wasn’t having it) to buy them when they first came out when I was a kid.
